Western Water incursion

On Friday the 20th March Ann from Western Water came to Carlsruhe
and gave us a presentation on the value of drinking water for health.
We need to drink 5 to 6 glasses of water every day to our bodies fit and healthy.
Water is vital for all of our body in order for it to function properly.

Sammy the snake is the mascot for Western Water.

Isabella ordered 6 drinks from the healthiest to the unhealthiest.
Tap water far outweighed all the other drinks.
Sebastian ordered the drinks for MU7 and we learnt that 400 glasses of tap water costs about 1 cent.

Keira showed us that there are nine and a half teaspoons of sugar in 375 ml of cake
by making our 'pretend'version of coke by simulating the recipe.

The recipe used by Amy and Keira included soda water for bubbles, red and green food colouring for the colour, vinegar for the acid, vanilla for the flavouring, and of course the sugar!

Mathilda and Olivia were our nurses who held onto Torso Sue,
while Ann talked about the digestive system and showed us all the parts.

River Detectives present their data

We made our poster to show the site we
collect our water samples from.
This poster shows the macro invertebrates
that we found when we tested the water.
A very sensitive water bug we found was
the water scorpion.
Our poster is about the health of the
river and what can be done to improve it.
Presenting the first poster.
This first graph shows the salinity levels
throughout the year.

The second graph shows the turbidity levels
each month.
This graph shows the Ph levels
throughout the year.
Our graph shows the Phosphorus levels
throughout the year.
We are sharing our knowledge about
all these macro invertebrates.
This group is sharing the information we
found on water scorpions.
Our concluding poster tells what we
can do to improve the health of
our river.
Angela, Nicole and Cass were our visitors
from the Regional Waterwatch program.
Looking carefully at the data on the graphs.
Testing the water for this month. The first
test was for the turbidity. We were able to
pour lots of water in, right to the top,
then over! This is really good.
Here we are testing the Ph levels.
We put 15 drops of chemical into the
water and read the results on the card.
The last group are testing with the EC meter.

That you Nicole for visiting us throughout the
year and for coming today with Angela and
Cass to hear our presentations.

Project presentations

Today Maia presented her project
on the silver gull to MU7.
We loved your costume Maia,
you made a great silver gull!

Broadbeans

Many students are enjoying harvesting the
produce from their garden. Today Agatha
picked lots of broad beans. She ate some
raw and took the rest home.
