Tania Parks came to talk to us about Endangered Species of fauna that
are sometimes brought into Australia across our borders when people
arrive via planes or boats. The trade includes food products, exotic leather
goods (snake skin boots, watch straps, back scratches, elephant hide
handbags),wooden musical instruments (drums),timber (teak),
tourist souvenirs (conch shells, red coral, mounted scorpions/butterflies)
and medicines (ivory and snake wine). The levels of exploitation of
some animals and species are high and the trade and habitat loss can
bring some species close to extinction. A recent example is the illegal
trade in Africa of ivory - tusks of elephants.
